The Renault Clio turns 25

Somewhat by accident, recent posts on the blog have been about cars of a French nature. In fact, I genuinely have always been a fan of French cars, and have owned a few, so I thought when I got the press release from Renault about its 25th birthday of the Clio; it’d be worth a post.

Firstly, I can’t really believe it was launched in 1991. Although I expect an H or J-reg Clio would be relatively hard to come by now.

It’s probably best remembered by the general public for the wonderful TV ad featuring ‘Nicole,’ her father, ‘Papa’, and a Provençal Chateau. If this video isn’t enough to make you want one....

The Clio I arrived in the UK on 29th March 1991 having already scooped the prestigious European Car of the Year award. In Britain, the range started with the RL 1.2 3-door at £7,190, and rose to the RT 1.4 five-door at £8,980; all models featured an extended eight-year warranty, with top-line RT specification bringing the sophistication (at the time!) of front electric windows, remote central locking and a stereo radio/cassette.

The Fast Clios

One of the best things about the Renault Clio was that it was an incredibly agile platform to build upon given Renault’s sporting heritage with the likes of the 5 Turbo. I’m still trying to get the opportunity to drive a Renault Clio Williams at some point. The Clio Cup is obviously a bit of a highlight when it comes to small hatchback motorsport in general, and I think it’d be hard to find another form of racing that looks quite as closely fought or impressive.

The Renault Small Car Heritage

One thing I like about the Renault Clio is that is follows in the tracks of other small Renaults like the 4 and 5. They somehow grow on your affections and they have a charm about them like no other...even the way the bonnet opens backwards and the wipers are the wrong way round. The first editions - mid 90s - are the best ones to go for and I think the examples that have the most character. Prices for early examples will start to up soon, so I'm pretty sure now is a good time to buy.
